Tipping Point Media and Arc of Monroe Bowling Competition

The Arc of Monroe County provides services in the community for individuals with developmental disabilities, and Tipping Point Media recently participated in a bowling challenge against the Arc Rollers team.  Myself and six coworkers were up for the competition against the Arc of Monroe’s team who had varying developmental disabilities.  None of the Tipping Point Media staff had bowled in quite a while and I ended up being the weakest link on the team! But some of our team members were great– impressively knocking down those pins!  Unfortunately we were no match for the Arc Rollers in the end.  They ended up defeating Tipping Point Media 677 to 627.  Their team of 5 were experienced bowlers that really had a love of the game and great bowling skills!  And Amanda from the Rollers received the highest individual game score — 183.

We definitely had a fun time bowling, but we ended up enjoying the company of the Arc Rollers much more than the game.  Bowling against the Rollers was a great experience for us.  It was a reminder that, even if someone is afflicted with a developmental disability, everyone should be treated equally and included in our community.  The Tipping Point Media team plans to have another competition against the Rollers back at Clover Lanes in the Fall, so we will keep you posted on that game’s outcome.

If your company or organization is interested in participating in a bowling challenge against the Arc of Monroe, you can reach out to Vicky Lopuchowycz at (585)672-2229 or vlopuchowycz@arcmonroe.org And to learn more about the Arc of Monroe during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, check out their website at www.arcmonroe.org.

On Thin Ice

Red Bull Open Ice Logo

I’m in the twilight of my 20’s and my body is already not letting me forget it.  So what do I go and do?  I sign up for a pond hockey tournament that’s taking place in February at Mendon Ponds Park.  It was this video that sold me. The rules state that there is no physical checking allowed, but that doesn’t mean the ice won’t be beating me up all weekend.  It was a New Year’s resolution of mine to join a gym and get in shape, but for some reason I prefer to do it the hard way and give a shot at some pond hockey.   So, I’ll be outside skating any chance I get between now and February 13th.  Who’s coming with me?

I used to have my own skates, when I was 10, but they do not fit so well anymore.  It wasn’t hard to track down a decent pair of skates though.  Play-It-Again Sports had a decent used pair that suited me just fine.  Doesn’t really matter either way, hockey skates are hockey skates, and will always be uncomfortable.  I don’t know how the pros do it.

I hadn’t skated in years and the last time I did was at Manhattan Square Park skating rink in Rochester, NY.  So that’s where I went this past weekend after picking up my new (for me anyway) skates.  They have a great new shack there that is definitely an upgrade, and very cozy next to the warm fireplace.  They also offer tasty hot chocolate for just a dollar.  I recommend the atmosphere and hot chocolate to everyone.

I contacted a few of my buddies who grew up playing hockey as kids, and even some in high school, and talked them into joining me on the ice the weekend of February 13th and 14th.  I got all the details on the Red Bull Open Ice Pond Hockey tournament and  registered.   Very easy.  The coolest part is that the winner of the Open Division gets an all-expense paid trip to Minnesota to play in the tournament finals.  There’s going to be teams from all over the U.S., as well as teams from Finland and Slovenia.  This is global, baby!

Not quite as easy as it sounds, but they did say everyone is guaranteed at least 3 games so I’ll have plenty of time to acquire multiple bruises, and you know there’s going to be an after party somewhere on Saturday night.  No matter what, it’s going to be a blast.  I hope to see you out there on the ice.

Creating a Habitat

Recently, a team from Tipping Point Media volunteered at a build for Flower City Habitat for Humanity.  Our efforts proved to be not only beneficial to those we were helping, but also to ourselves!

As volunteers, we were assigned a variety of tasks to complete throughout the day on two different houses – everything from edging the newly poured cement driveway, to nailing in the basement floor boards, to even roofing one of the houses!  Not only were we able to develop some new household skills but it was very rewarding to know that our volunteer work was going to a great cause.

While at the build, I was particularly impressed by the commitment, dedication, and support that regular volunteers exhibited.  During our volunteer day, we met a handful of individuals that volunteer once a week with Flower City Habitat – and even met one couple that has been volunteering one day a week for over a decade!

Flower City Habitat is able to build around 10 homes a year, in addition to refurbishing several existing homes in the community.  Once an individual qualifies and is accepted into the Habitat program, they must commit 450 hours of community service. About half of those hours are spent building their own home, but the remaining hours can be volunteered at other Habitat builds, or at a variety of non-profit agencies in Rochester like Food Link. Known as a ‘sweat equity’ approach, each individuals contribution is beneficial to the community at large because of its pay it forward approach.

I highly encourage you to participate in a Habitat build.  Get your coworkers, your friends, or your family together for a day!  Hey, I didn’t know I was such a decent cement edger before I had the opportunity to test my skills.  You never know what skill you’ll learn, or what valuable experiences you will take away from volunteering!
